European union - Emissions Trading Scheme

The mandatory European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) tackles regulated greenhouse gases (GHGs) by requiring power, industrial, and aircraft sectors to obtain and relinquish emissions allowances. Known as EUAs, these allowances represent the quantity of GHGs emitted annually and can be bought and sold in a “cap and trade” marketplace. Starting from 1 January 2024, the EU ETS applies to CO2 emissions from all vessels of 5,000 GRT and above that enter EU ports, regardless of their Flag State. There are specific grading distinctions if both the loadport and disport are within the EU or if one is outside. Additionally, for shipping, the scheme will apply to methane and nitrous oxide emissions starting in 2026.

This introduces the challenge of compliance, which involves additional requirements and the need for strategic carbon management. However, it also presents the opportunity to assist in decarbonisation efforts through trading in the world’s first and most extensive carbon market. New Building Supervision

With a pool of multinational and multi-skilled specialists, OCEANUS GLOBAL TRADERS’ experienced and capable new build team provides owners and other stakeholders with professional consultancy, project management, and supervision services for new build and conversion projects worldwide.

The new shipbuilding and supervision team can handle all financial, technical, operational, and environmental aspects, from conceptualization to post-delivery, including:

Ballast Water Treatment System
